Roofing Calculator — Shingle Bundles, Squares & Materials

Estimate how many shingle bundles you need plus underlayment, drip edge, ice shield, and nails. Accounts for roof pitch and complexity. Works for both building footprint and known roof area measurements.

    Tips

    • Finding your pitch — measure 12" horizontal from a rafter, then measure the vertical rise. That's your X:12 pitch.
    • Complexity — simple = gable/hip; moderate = dormers, valleys; complex = multiple levels, turrets.
    • Safety — pitches above 6:12 require roof jacks and safety harnesses. Never work alone.
    • Ice shield — required in cold climates along eaves, valleys, and around penetrations.
    • Starter strip — don't forget starter shingles along eaves and rakes (not included here).
    • See our roof pitch chart for pitch-to-degree conversions and multipliers.

    Example Calculation

Roofing a 30×50 foot ranch house with a 6:12 pitch and simple gable roof? The footprint is 1,500 square feet, which becomes 1,677 square feet of actual roof surface after applying the pitch multiplier (1.118). That is 16.8 squares, requiring approximately 51 bundles of 3-tab shingles. You will also need 5 rolls of underlayment, 2 ridge cap bundles, 16 pieces of drip edge, and 22 boxes of roofing nails. At $30–$40 per bundle, shingles alone cost $1,530–$2,040.

    Frequently Asked Questions

How many bundles of shingles do I need per square?

3 bundles per square (100 square feet) for standard 3-tab shingles. Architectural shingles vary and may require 4–5 bundles per square depending on the manufacturer.

    What is my roof pitch?

Place a level horizontally against your roof or a rafter in the attic. Measure 12 inches along the level, then measure the vertical distance from that point to the roof surface. That vertical measurement is your pitch. A 6-inch rise over 12 inches of run is a 6:12 pitch, the most common residential pitch.

What is the minimum pitch for shingles?

Most manufacturers require at least a 4:12 pitch for standard shingle installation. Roofs between 2:12 and 4:12 require special underlayment and installation methods. Below 2:12, use a membrane roofing system instead.

How do I measure my roof from the ground?

Measure the building footprint (length × width), then multiply by the pitch multiplier from the table above. This gives you the approximate roof surface area without climbing on the roof.

Should I add extra for waste?

Yes. Select "Simple" complexity for a basic gable roof (minimal waste). Select "Moderate" for roofs with a few valleys or dormers (15% extra). Select "Complex" for roofs with many angles, valleys, and skylights (30% extra).

    Typical Results

Small home(1,000 sq ft footprint, 4/12 pitch)11–13 squares
Average home(1,500 sq ft footprint, 6/12 pitch)19–22 squares
Large home(2,500 sq ft footprint, 8/12 pitch)38–45 squares

💡 If square count seems low, double-check the roof pitch. A 6/12 pitch adds ~12% area over flat.
